The motion direction depends on whether hydraulic pressure is applied from the piston or rod side.When pressure is applied to the rod (b) of the hydraulic cylinder the hydraulic cylinder rod retracts. When pressure is applied to the piston side (a), the rod extends.

When pressure is applied to both sides (piston and rod side) the cylinder rod extends, because the force acting on the piston side is higher due to the larger effective surface. When the cylinder rod extends the soft top compartment cover opens.
