Procedure B
B. CHECK BOTH CATALYTIC CONVERTERS AND REPLACE AS REQUIRED1. Check catalytic converters.
^ Follow DAS path "Control units/ Drive/ ME 9.7/ Complete list of guided tests/ Catalyst efficiency" (Figure 1).
Note:
Menu item "Catalyst efficiency" is no longer visible as of DAS release 04/09. Please call SDS Help Desk for instructions to perform this test.
2. Follow on-screen instructions to perform 5 required catalytic converter tests (see Figure 2).
Note:
Ensure to obey all local traffic laws!
^ Perform "Self-adaptation of mixture formation (at partial load)" test (Figure 3).
^ While driving keep air mass and engine load values in green area until test is completed.
^ Click "F2" once it becomes available to proceed to next test.
^ Perform "Self-adaptation of mixture formation (at idle)" test (Figure 4).
^ Pull over and let vehicle idle.
^ Keep air mass and engine load values in green area until test is completed.
^ Click "F2" once it becomes available to proceed to next test.
^ Perform "Catalyst efficiency: Deceleration mode (time-controlled)" test (Figure 5).
^ While driving increase engine speed to 2500-3000 rpm, then decelerate down to <1000 rpm.
^ Click "F2" once it becomes available to proceed to next test.
^ Perform "Catalyst efficiency: Deceleration mode (Cycles [N])" test (Figure 6).
^ Drive vehicle onto highway with speed limit of 55 mph or higher.
^ Accelerate vehicle slowly to 55 mph, then release gas pedal to decelerate down to 52 mph.
^ Repeat procedure until Actual value counter reaches 6.
^ Click "F2" once it becomes available to proceed to final test.
^ Perform final "Catalyst efficiency" test (Figure 7).
^ While driving keep Catalyst temperature right, Catalyst temperature left, Exhaust flow right, and Exhaust flow left values in green area until test is completed.
^ DAS will automatically proceed to test results page.
3. Perform one of the following, depending on results of test (circled area of Figure 8):
^ If text reads Catalyst right do not renew and Catalyst left do not renew: Disconnect Star Diagnosis and proceed to step 5.
^ If text reads Catalyst right renew or Catalyst left renew: proceed to step 4 replace both catalytic converters.
4. Replace both catalytic converters; refer to WIS document AR49.10-P5531QB.
Note:
In the case that catalytic converters need replacement, the printout of the test results (Figure 8) must accompany returned catalytic converters.
5. Fill out Repair Label and affix on underside of hood next to existing emissions labels (as shown in Figure 9).
Note:
^ Ensure the surface is clean prior to affixing the label.
^ Use a ball point pen to fill in the label; do not use a marker or felt tip pen.
^ The label is being mailed to dealers prior to the launch of this Recall Campaign. Additional labels are available as literature through NetStar free of charge (order# P-BQ-AEM-LBL).
Note:
Step 6 is to be performed by California dealers only!
6. Print Proof of Correction form shown above and fill out as shown in Figure 10.
Note:
The Proof of Correction form can also be found on STAR TekInfo under the "Forms and Test Sheets > Other Forms" heading.
^ Scan form and keep a copy for dealer records.
^ Hand form to customer or place in glove box.
