Ignition Coil: Service and Repair
Remove, install ignition coil module
Removing
DANGER:
- Hazard from contact with parts conducting high voltages.
- Do not touch parts which conduct high voltages. Persons who wear electronic implants (e.g. heart pacemakers) must not carry out work on the ignition system.
1 Remove air cleaner
2 Unplug connector (arrow) of electrical connection of cylinder shutoff valve 7-9 (Y80/1)
NOTE: When removing the left ignition module.
3 Unplug connector (arrow) of electrical connection of ECI ignition module (N92/1,N92/2)
4 Release fuel pressure through service valve
NOTE: Collect fuel.

5 Remove complete fuel feed line
NOTE: When removing the left ignition module. Collect fuel.
CAUTION: Removal: It is not permissible to bend fuel feed line out of the way. There is a risk of splits forming at the fuel rail, and also at the fuel feed line.
6 Separate plug connections of 02 sensors
7 Unscrew bolts (1, 2, 3, 4 and 6)
8 Loose screws (5)
9 Lower shield (7)
10 Pull ECI ignition module (N92/1,N92/2) evenly off the spark plugs

Installing
11 Fit ECI ignition module (N92/1,N92/2) onto the spark plugs and press on evenly by hand until the dowel pins are located in the guides
CAUTION: Installation: Do not strike the ignition module, otherwise there is a risk of damaging it. The gaskets of the ignition modules to the spark plugs must be replaced each time they are removed. Make sure that the spark plug connector lugs (8) are not bent to the inside. They must be in contact with the spark plug bore (cylinder head).

12 Install shield (7)
- Bolt of shield to cylinder head: 8 Nm
13 Slightly tighten bolts (1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) alternately
14 Slightly tighten bolts (5)
15 Fully tighten bolts (1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) alternately
CAUTION: Specified torque value must be strictly observed.
- Bolt of ignition coil module to cylinder head: 8 Nm
16 Fully tighten bolts (5)
CAUTION: Specified torque value must be strictly observed.
- Bolt of bracket to ignition coil module: 8 Nm
17 Fit together plug connections of 02 sensors
18 Install fuel feed line (17/2) completely
- Fuel feed line to fuel rail: 38 Nm
19 Plug on connector (arrow) of electrical connection at ECI ignition module (N92/1, N92/2)
20 Plug in connector (arrow) of electrical connection of cylinder shutoff valve 7-9 (Y80/1)
21 Install air cleaner
22 Read fault memory and erase, if necessary
- Stored faults which can result from cables being disconnected or from simulation during removal and installation or test work, have to be processed and erased in the fault memories after completing the work.
