The soft top is opened and closed hydraulically. A pump in the rollbar/soft top operation hydraulic unit (A7/5) provides the required operating pressure, hydraulic cylinders actuate the soft top mechanism. A total of 7 hydraulic cylinders are installed:
Left hydraulic cylinder for opening/closing soft top
Right hydraulic cylinder for opening/closing soft top
Left hydraulic cylinder for putting up/lowering soft top bow
Right hydraulic cylinder for putting up/lowering soft top bow Hydraulic cylinder for releasing/locking soft top bow
Hydraulic cylinder for opening/closing soft top compartment cover
Hydraulic cylinder for locking/unlocking soft top compartment cover
The power soft top mechanism Is controlled by the rollbar/soft top operation control module (N52). It evaluates the positions of limit switches and control switches and switches the solenoid valves (Y56/2y1.....Y56/y7)as required for control of the hydraulic cylinders. The solenoid valves (Y56/2y1....Y56/y7) are located on the soft top control valve block (7 connections, Y56/2).
The soft top is activated with the aid of the power soft top switch (S84) whereby the following operations are possible:
- Open soft top
- Close soft top
- Stop functions (interruption of soft top motion)
Automatically extending/retracting rollbar
Since the rollbar is in the way of the soft top motion in the extended position, it is initially retracted automatically when the soft top starts moving. The rollbar is automatically moved back to the position it was in before actuation of the power soft top at the end of each soft top opening or closing operation.
Automatically opening/closing the side windows
Before the soft top starts moving the side windows are first opened completely in order to avoid damaging or jamming the windows or a collision with the linkage flaps.
Remote trunk release
N52 cyclically transmits the information "SOFT TOP CLOSED", "SOFT TOP RELEASED" or "SOFT TOP OPEN" on the CAN bus. As soon as the message "SOFT TOP RELEASED" is present the PSE control module (combined, A37) no longer performs the remote trunk release function.
Acoustic warning signal from overhead control panel control module (N70)
- At the end of a soft top opening or closing operation a signal sounds for 1 s from the overhead control panel control module (N70) confirming correct completion.
- When the vehicle is driven and the soft top is not heard properly a warning signal sounds for 10 s. A reset is necessary in order to output the warning signal again:
- Switch ignition "ON" and back "OFF" or
- change in the switch status of a limit switch.
Monitoring of soft top functions
To monitor the motion of the soft top each motion stage is checked for the duration of the actuation time for solenoid valves (except for stop function) until reaching the expected limit switch positions. If the required time is exceeded the operation is terminated and the malfunctions stored in N52.
After switching the ignition "OFF" and back "ON" the operation can be continued.
Operation of the soft top is inhibited under the following circumstances:
- Voltage in vehicle electrical system too low (information comes from CAN bus)
- Exceeding a certain temperature threshold for the motor (A7/5m1) for the rollbar/soft top operation hydraulic unit (A7/5).
- Speed of vehicle not equal to 0 km/h (information from CAN bus)
- Various malfunctions stored in N52 (e.g. power soft top switch (S84) defective).
- Operation of the soft top is not possible when the trunk lid is open, because a collision between the trunk lid and soft top compartment cover is possible.
NOTE: If malfunctions occur, the soft top can also be opened and closed manually.
