Checking Cooling System For Leaks
NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.
Procedure
WARNING:
^ Risk of injury to skin and eyes from scalding from hot coolant which splashes out.
^ Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.
^ Do not open the cooling system unless the coolant temperature is below 90°C.
^ Open cap slowly and allow the pressure to release.
^ Do not pour coolant into containers for drinks wear protective gloves, protective clothes, and eye protection.
1. Open cap of expansion reservoir or radiator (2, 2a) Cap (2, 2a)
- Cap with detent (2): carefully turn cap to the first detent, release pressure and then unscrew cap.
- 2-stage cap (2a): turn cap half a turn anticlockwise, release pressure and then unscrew cap.
2. Position heating switches to maximum heating capacity
3. Check coolant level
- Adjust to correct-level if necessary
4. Fit suitable test cap (3) onto expansion reservoir or radiator
5. Pressurize cooling system
- Test pressure: approx. 1.4 bar
CAUTION: With new cylinder head gasket, warm engine up to operating temperature and then inspect cooling system for leaks
6. Inspect cooling and heating hoses and their connection points for proper condition and loss of coolant.
- Inspect condition and correct installation of hose clips.
- If necessary, after inspecting, re-tighten or replace hose clips, replace coolant hoses.
