TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
SUBJECT:
MODEL 140 (ENGINE 119)
EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION LABEL REPLACEMENT
MBAG has informed us that the Emission Control Information (ECI) label (Figure 1) affixed to the radiator cross-member on approximately 8000 late production model year 1995 model 140 vehicles equipped with V8 engines may be wrong.
An enhanced EVAP system was installed in production and the label affixed to the car may not reflect the change. The incorrect label was installed in production in the serial number range indicated below.
Enclosed is a sample copy of the letter which will be mailed to all owners of vehicles within the Effective Serial Number Range below.

Emission Recall # 97-0312
Dear Mercedes Owner:
Mercedes-Benz of North America has determined that the Emission Control Information label affixed on certain 1995 model year S420, S500 and S500C models may not contain the correct information. Our records indicate that your car is included in this group.
WHAT'S WRONG
The Emission Control Information label may not contain the EVAP FAMILY for both Federal and California requirements.
EFFECT ON EMISSIONS
Since this is only a text omission on the label affixed to the vehicle, there is no adverse affect on fuel economy, driveability or performance of the vehicle. However, without the correct label your vehicle may fail a vehicle inspection or Smog Check test when such tests are required by law.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
A new label will be installed free of charge at your local authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. The label is a controlled item. Therefore, to assure that the label is at the dealer when you arrive, it is requested that you advise your dealer of this letter when scheduling your next appointment. The removal of the previous version label and installation of the correct label should not require more than 30 minutes to complete.
In order to ensure full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by Federal Law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be a lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle.
QUESTIONS
Should you have any questions or encounter any difficulty regarding this recall, please contact us at Mercedes-Benz of North America, Customer Assistance Center, One Glenview Road, Montvale, NJ 07645. Our toll-free number is 1-800 FOR-MERCedes (1-800-367-6372).
IF YOU ARE NO LONGER THE OWNER OF THE DESCRIBED VEHICLE.
Please fill in the "Owner's Reply Card" providing the new owner's name and address or other disposition (traded, scrapped, stolen, etc.) as appropriate. The "owner's Reply Card" is stamped and self-addressed to minimize your inconvenience.
We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause you.
To identify whether a vehicle within range is affected, perform a Vehicle Master Inquiry (VMI). By law, vehicles in dealer inventory may not be retailed until the recall campaign is performed.
Please note:
If the campaign claim was submitted less than 1 week prior, the campaign may still be indicated as being open even though the car was corrected, i.e. there is up to a 1 week delay before the campaign claim is reflected on VMI.
Check A-pillar on the driver's side for recall sticker (Figure 2).
If a recall sticker label is affixed with Recall Campaign number 97-0312, the campaign was already performed and no further action is necessary (see Warranty Instruction).
The incorrect ECI label must be replaced with the correct version (Figure 1) during the vehicle's next scheduled maintenance or repair or at an appointment made by the customer to have the correction made.
To replace the ECI label, carefully remove the incorrect label. Clean the surface and affix the correct ECI label at the same location.
After completion of the campaign, write the recall number 97-0312 and dealer code on the appropriate location on the recall sticker (LZ-26O5-093) (Figure 2) and affix the recall sticker to the driver's door A-pillar.
Parts Information
An initial amount of ECI labels equal to 50% of affected vehicles sold by the respective dealer will be supplied. Subsequent label requirements must be ordered by contacting your local PDC via fax. Orders for ECI labels will be handled outside the parts ordering system - the labels will be blocked from system reordering. A corresponding chassis number must be provided for each label ordered. Orders without chassis numbers and duplicate orders for the same chassis number will not be processed.
Should it be necessary to order an ECI label, it is suggested to place the fax order when scheduling the vehicle's next maintenance or repair, thereby avoiding any inconvenience to the vehicle owner.
