D. Rear Apron (Model 124)

Preparation

1. Remove or open trunk side trim.

2. Remove cover between bumper and wheel well.





3. Remove bumper by removing mounting nuts on left and right side walls and along rear wall of trunk (arrows, Figure 19).

!CAUTION!
The actual removal of the bumper should be done by two persons to avoid paint damage.

Disassembling the bumper

4. Remove impact absorber sections.





5. Remove rub strip (B, Figure 20) by unscrewing 2 Phillips head screws on left and right ends of bumper.
Using a plastic wedge, pry back retaining tabs two at a time starting from the outside. Remove rub strip and foam insert.

6. Remove center four brackets. Push out the two side brackets.

Assembly





7. Install four brackets as shown in Figure 21. Slide side brackets into holder.

8. Position rub strip and foam insert on rear apron and press retaining tabs into slots. Install 3 screws on left and right ends of bumper.

9. Slide reinforcement supplied between original foam impact absorbers sections and upper edge of rear apron.

Final assembly

10. Install rear apron/bumper assembly on vehicle using the original mounting points without fully tightening mounting bolts.

11. Inspect alignment of assembly and adjust if necessary.

12. Tighten mounting bolts.

13. Install trunk lining.

Optional procedure - Transferring chrome moldings from original bumper cover to AMG rear apron/bumper cover assembly

^ Trial fit moldings before painting bumper cover.

^ Drill holes in AMG part according to production bumper cover.

^ Paint bumper without moldings, then install moldings and clips on left and right side.

^ Modify reinforcement piece in area of clips.
