Variable Valve Timing Solenoid: Description and Operation

Camshaft Timing Adjuster:

PURPOSE
The camshaft solenoids (Y49/1 and Y49/2) enable the LH control units to specifically tune the intake valve timing for improved torque, volumetric efficiency, and driveability.

OPERATION

Camshaft Timing Advanced:

When the camshaft adjusting solenoids are energized the intake camshafts are turned 20° of crankshaft rotation in the advanced direction.

Camshaft Timing Retarded:

When the LH control units remove the current to the solenoids the camshafts return to the retarded position. The camshaft position sensors monitor camshaft position as an input parameter for the EZL/AKR control units.
