Cylinder Head - Resurfacing Recommendations
REF. NO. MBNA 01/4TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
DATE: September 1987
SUBJECT:
RESURFACING CYLINDER HEAD
ENGINES 601, 602 AND 603A
Should resurfacing of the cylinder head become necessary on the above engines, the dimensions must be observed in order to avoid contact with the piston crown.
See Service Microfiche Engine 601, 602, 603 Mechanical I, job no. 01-418 for additional data.
Following the resurfacing operation, the proper size shim must be selected to maintain the necessary protrusion of 7.6 - 8.1 mm of the burner tip of the prechamber from the cylinder head parting line.
Clean the seating surface for the shim in the cylinder head, and align tab on prechamber with groove in cylinder head.
Heads which can not be resurfaced to the required flatness with overall minimum height of 142.4 mm, must be discarded.
CAUTION!
Do not use the heat shield part no. 617 017 02 60 (under the nozzle tip) from engine 617 in the above mentioned engines. Once driven in, the tight fitting heat shield from engine 617 can not be removed and may become distorted due to heat expansion.
