Trunk - Lid Rattles While Driving

REF. NO. MBNA 88/9

To: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: December 1987

SUBJECT:
TRUNK LID RATTLE
MODEL 107

Complaints concerning rattling noises in the trunk area when driving over irregular road surfaces, are caused by the trunk lid sheet metal contacting the reinforcement frame under the trunk lid skin.

These noises can be eliminated by inserting self-adhesive felt strips between the reinforcement frame and trunk lid skin in areas where these components are not mated together.

Cut the strip to a suitable length and with the adhesive side facing the trunk lid, slide it between the frame and skin (Figure 1).

Press the strip into place only after it has been correctly positioned. Approximately one half of the width of the strip should protrude from the reinforcement frame (Figure 2).

NOTE:
Care should be taken in inserting these strips. They should not be forced into place and should only be inserted where noticeable clearances exist. Forcing strips in place may damage the thin metal skin of the trunk lid.
