Recall - Trap Oxidizer Replacement: Overview
REF. NO. MBNA 09/6TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
DATE: September 1987
SUBJECT:
REPLACEMENT OF TRAP OXIDIZERS
ENGINE 617A - CALIFORNIA VERSION
MODELS 123 AND 126 MODEL YEAR 1985
The trap oxidizer on the subject engines must be replaced at 30,000 mile intervals. The first replacement (to be done during scheduled service or maintenance) should be at or close to 30,000 miles, or at any mileage higher than 30,000 miles if the vehicle has already exceeded 30,000 miles. At the same time, the turbocharger should be examined for holes visible in the turbine housing. The Work Instructions No. 220 describe the procedure in detail.
Effective Serial Number
1985 R.Y. California Version (Code 494)
The 1985 Registration Year is identified by the letter "F" in the 10th position of the VIN. Vehicles within the above serial number ranges with letters "E" or "G" are not affected.
Only California version vehicles are subject to the campaign, regardless of the state they are registered in.
California version vehicles are identified by:
- their version code 494 embossed on the production plate (on radiator shroud)
- their Emission Control Information Label (Engine Family FMB3.OD9KC20)
All owners of the vehicles will receive a copy of the attached letter, a maintenance booklet supplement, and a campaign claim form for this initial replacement in the near future.
For proper control over this service campaign it is essential that after replacement of the trap oxidizer, a label (Figure 1) is placed on the left "A" pillar showing the mileage of the next trap oxidizer exchange. Calculate the mileage by rounding the present mileage to the nearest thousand and adding 30,000. In addition, the replacement must be confirmed in the maintenance booklet supplement sent to all owners of affected vehicles.
If the trap oxidizer was previously replaced, perform the following:
- turbocharger boost pressure test
(DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL DE-02.13)
- Trap Oxidizer test (back pressure)
(DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL DE-02.16)
- visual inspection of turbocharger housing
If the system operates as per specifications, place the Trap Oxidizer mileage label on the "A" pillar showing the mileage for the next replacement by adding 30,000 to the mileage of the rounded off original replacement mileage.
If a fault is found, make the necessary repairs and place the Trap Oxidizer label on the "A" pillar as previously outlined.
Dealers servicing California version vehicles are receiving 3 sheets of 30 Trap Oxidizer Labels each, for a total of 90 labels and 10 copies each of the maintenance booklet supplement. In addition, 6 labels and one copy of the maintenance booklet supplement are being sent to all other dealers with this Service Information.
If the trap oxidizer is replaced by a dealer not usually servicing California version vehicles, additional labels can be ordered from the Technical Publications Department.
