If a window regulator makes a scraping noise while being operated, it should be repaired by replacing only the compensating spring, not the complete window regulator.
Since April 1984, window regulators with wax-coated compensating springs (arrow) have been installed. This spring is available as a replacement part (Figure 1).
IMPORTANT: Do not grease the new compensating spring. The grease dissolves the wax coating and then the scraping noise will return.

Compensating Spring Replacement
1. Remove the door panel (service Microfiche Job No. 72-100) and peel back the forward section of the plastic sheet.
2. Close the window.
3.. Remove the compensating spring with the spring mounting tool, part no. 900 589 00 62 00. Place the tool slot over the end of the spring (arrow). Wind-up the spring clockwise, lift it carefully over the engaging tab, and slowly release the spring tension (Figure 2).

4. Remove compensating spring and clean off all grease residue from regulator.
5. Insert the new compensating spring on the shaft (arrow) of the toothed drive segment (Figure 3).
6. Carefully wind-up the compensating spring with the special tool and engage it on the tab.
7. Check for quiet window operation.
8. Re-attach plastic sheet to door and install door panel.
