Timing Chain: Application and ID



NOTE: A timing chain with a split link is available for repairs.
Check sprockets for scoring and pitting.


To obtain a greater running performance, timing chains made from a material of greater wear resistance are installed.

The valid repair timing chain also was changed to a material of greater wear resistance.

It is no longer permissible to install the former repair timing chain and the split link.

Production breakpoints:

Engine 615.940, June- November 1981

Chromized timing chain, bolt with shoulder, sleeves impact-oriented.

Engine 615.940 December 1981 - June 1982 and as from July 1982

Engines 616.912, 617.91 as from October 1982

Chromized timing chain, bolt smooth (without shoulder), sleeves impact-oriented and ball-blasted, increased end play.

















As of December 1982 to May 1983 engine 616.912 is provided with timing chains made by another manufacturer.

The chains are identified by the following marks stamped into outer link plates.

Identity marks: DID and 06 BD.

For repairs, install previous timing chain.

Repair timing chain
The repair timing chain is made from the same material as the series timing chain.

Only a rivetable plug link (A) for timing chain is available as of now. Do not use version (B) any longer.

The outer link plate of the plug link is pressed on by means of press-on tool, part No.000 589 58 43 00.

The outer link plates are inked blue.

The former assembly tool 000 589 57 43 for plug links with retaining spring can be converted by means of conversion set 000 589 58 43 80.

Change part No. of assembly tool to 000 589 58 43.
