Complaint:
External oil leaks
Cause/Remedy:
In case of external oil leaks, the cause of which cannot be determined beyond any doubt, proceed as follows:
Clean testing area from any oil residues, dry and spray with "MB Contrast Spray White", part No. 000 589 03 59.
Start engine and keep it running. The leaking oil will become visible after 2-5 min.
Seal pertinent area.
NOTE: "MB Contrast Spray White" replaces the sprayer delivered up to now, part No. 000 989 01 59.
Complaint:
Crankshaft pulley has come loose and screws partly sheared off.
Cause/Remedy:
Mount new screws without washer.
Complaint:
Front crankshaft radial seal is leaking at outer diameter.
Cause/Remedy:
Coat new crankshaft radial seals prior to insertion at outer shoulder in the area of the separating lines (oil pan/cylinder crankshaft housing) with sealing compound, part No. 001 989 29 20 or part No. 001 989 46 20. Service and Repair
Allow sealing compound to harden for approx. 3 hours; do not remove pulling-in device during this time.
Complaint:
Bright knocking noise at idle and in lower speed range up to approx. 2500/min.

Cause/Remedy:
Combustion noise, which is still further reinforced by the pulley with a profile width of 12.5 mm (was 9.5 mm), installed since February 1979.

NOTE: The noise is most clearly heard when standing in front of the vehicle. Damages to the engine or to the pulley will not occur.
Complaint:
Knocking noise at idle
Engines 615, 616, 617.912
Cause/Remedy:
Connecting rod from 1st and 4th/5th cylinder contacting cheek of crankshaft.
There are no problems to continue operation of engine.
Remove oil pan lower section and push connecting rod from 1st cylinder axially to stop. Measure clearance with slip gauge. If there is a clearance of more than 0.9 mm, crankshaft and connecting rod may be replaced.
NOTE: To determine the knocking noise, bring vehicle to a stop on a sloping ground (e.g. directed uphill or downhill), actuate clutch with the engine running or in driving position "N", noise should change.
