Repair Procedure

NOTE:
It is recommended an upholstery shop or a technician with upholstery experience perform this repair.

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Record the radio presets.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

4. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute.

WARNING:
Handling the front seat (side air bag) improperly can accidentally deploy the side air bag, which may seriously injure you. Read AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS and CAUTIONS before handling the front seat. Refer to the Workshop Manual section 08-10 - AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS and AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE CAUTIONS.

WARNING:
When the passenger's seat is removed and replaced, perform the seat weight sensor calibration using the IDS/PDS to ensure proper air bag deployment during an accident. Refer to the Workshop Manual section 8-10 - SEAT WEIGHT SENSOR CALIBRATION.

NOTE:
Repeat steps 5 through 35 on both front seat assemblies except for steps that are specific to the passenger or driver side.

5. On the passenger's side, remove the cover of seat belt anchor on the passenger seat.





6. On the passenger's side, remove the seat belt anchor bolt A on the passenger seat.

7. On both sides under the front part of the seat, press connector tab A in the direction of the arrow, then pull out the connector lock in the direction of the arrow to disconnect the connector.





8. On both sides, remove the covers from the front seat mounting bolts, then removing the mounting bolts and the seat.





9. On both sides, remove the seat cushion frame bolts.








10. On the passenger's side, unplug the three connectors plugged into the seat weight sensor control module.

11. On the passenger's side, remove the two clips holding the seat weight sensor control module, then remove the module.

12. On both sides, unclip the wire harness clips from the seat cushion frame.

13. On the driver's side, unclip the black seat connector junction from the seat frame using a small flathead screwdriver.





14. On both sides, unclip the yellow SRS wire harness sub-connector from the black seat connector junction using a small flathead screwdriver.





15. On both sides, disconnect the J-hook from the seat cushion frame.

16. On both sides, carefully pull the yellow SRS harness sub-connector through the hole in the cushion trim so it is no longer connected to the seat cushion.

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the SRS harness and sub-connector.





17. Remove the seat cushion/frame assembly from the seat assembly and place it upside down on a clean blanket or fender cover.

18. Remove the sides of the seat cushion trim attached at the tabs on the seat cushion frame.

19. Bend away the metal tabs on the seat cushion frame from the seat cushion trim.





20. Unfold the front of the seat cushion trim from the seat cushion frame.





21. Pull the seat cushion trim off the seat cushion frame, then remove the frame.

22. Remove the seat cushion trim from the seat cushion by cutting all the hog rings (15 total).





23. Using hog ring pliers, install the 15 new hog rings following the order shown.





a. Line up a mounting hole on the inside of seat cushion trim with the exposed steel rib in the seat cushion.





b. Place a new hog ring in hog ring pliers..





C. Insert one end of the hog ring through the mounting hole in the seat cushion trim and the other end under the steal rib in the seat cushion, then push in towards the seat cushion rib and squeeze the pliers.





d. Verify the hog ring is properly installed, looping through the mounting hole in the seat cushion trim and around the steal rib in the seat cushion.

24. Reassemble the seat cushion with the seat cushion frame in the reverse order.

25. Inspect the seat cushion trim for any wrinkles and correct if necessary.

26. On both sides, install the seat cushion on the seat track, aligning the holes for the seat cushion frame bolts, but do NOT install the bolts.

27. On both sides, reinstall the yellow SRS harness sub-connector through the hole in the seat cushion trim.

28. On both sides, clip the wire harnesses onto the seat cushion frame.

29. On both sides, reconnect the J-hook to the seat cushion frame.

30. On both sides, clip the yellow SRS harness sub-connector to the black seat connector junction.

31. On the driver's side, clip the black seat connector junction to the seat frame.

32. On the passenger's side reinstall the seat weight sensor control module using the original clips.

33. On the passenger's side, reconnect the three harness connectors to the seat weight sensor control module.

34. On both sides, install the bolts for the seat cushion frame to seat track, and torque to 16-22 Nm [1.7-2.2 kgf m, 12-16 ft-lbf].

35. Reinstall the seat assembly in the reverse order of steps 5 to 8.

36. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

37. Perform passenger Seat Weight Sensor Re-zero using the procedure below.

a. Have four 10 kg weights, MRT MT04-S1-001.

b. Connect the M-MDS IDS (or PDS) to the vehicle.

C. Identify the vehicle.

d. Select Tool Box.

e. For IDS, select Body, then select Restraints For PDS, select All Tests and Calibrations.

f. Select Passenger Seat Weight Sensor Re-zero.

g. Select # 1 You have replaced the SWS or the SWS module or seat parts.

h. Follow the M-MDS instructions, utilizing all four 10 kg weights.

38. Start the engine and verify the air bag indicators work properly. If for any reason the the indicators do not work as stated, verify all components and connectors from this repair are properly installed and connected. If needed, refer to the Workshop Manual section 08 RESTRAINTS.

a. With the passenger seat empty, make sure the Passenger Airbag Deactivation (PAD) indicator on the dashboard is not illuminated.

b. With a 10kg weight on the passenger seat, make sure the PAD indicator comes on.

c. Make sure the air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system warning light in the instrument cluster is not illuminated.

39. Verify repair.

40. Set the customer's preset radio stations.
