This recall is to correct a MIL condition with DTC P0456 and/or P2404.
1. Verify that the vehicle is within the following ranges:
^ 2003 Miata VIN Range: JM1NB353*30300005 - 311451 (Built between 7-23-2002 and 3-21-2003)

2. Perform a Vehicle Status Inquiry using your eMDCS System and inspect vehicle for an Authorized Modification Label RECALL 1003E attached to the underside of the vehicle's hood. Refer to illustration.
NOTE:
Be sure to verify RECALL number as the vehicle may have multiple recalls.
- If eMDCS displays RECALL 1003E OPEN and an Authorized Modification Label is not present, the RECALL has not been performed. Proceed to "B. REPAIR PROCEDURE".
- If eMDCS displays RECALL 1003E OPEN and an Authorized Modification Label is present, contact the Warranty Department. They will update the vehicle warranty.
- If eMDCS displays RECALL 1003E CLOSED and an Authorized Modification Label is not present, proceed to "C. AUTHORIZED MODIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION".
- If eMDCS displays RECALL 1003E CLOSED and an Authorized Modification Label is present, the RECALL has already been completed. Return the vehicle to the customer.
- If eMDCS does not display RECALL 1003E OPEN or RECALL 1003E CLOSED, this RECALL does not apply to the vehicle. Return vehicle to the customer.
B. REPAIR PROCEDURE
Before starting procedure:
- Obtain all keys from customer.
NOTE:
If this procedure is performed and customer has additional keys that are not at the dealer, those keys will no longer start the engine.
1. Replace PCM:
a. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
b. Disconnect the connector from the PCM installed on the upper part of the brake pedal.
c. Push the harness (PCM harness) installed to the brake pedal bracket in the opposite direction of the brake pedal bracket.
d. While pushing the harness, push the stay until it comes apart from the stud with the PCM installation nut.
e. Remove the PCM installation nut.
f. Remove the bolt and nut holding the PCM.
g. Install in the reverse order of removal.
Tightening torque
Bolt, nut: 7.9-10.7 Nm (80-110 kgf.cm, 70-95.4 in.lbf)
2. Select repair procedures below according to how many valid keys were provided:
- Customer has 2 or more valid keys: Repair Procedure I
- Customer has only 1 valid key: Repair Procedure II
Repair Procedure I
Customer has 2 or more valid keys
NOTE:
^ If no specific time interval is given, each step should be performed within 30 seconds of the previous step.
1. Cut new transponder equipped key(s) if necessary.
2. Using key 1, turn ignition switch to ON position, and observe that security light illuminates (for 1-2 seconds) in instrument cluster.
a. Turn key 1 to LOCK position.
b. Turn key 1 to ON position then back to LOCK position six times . The key should not remain at ON position or LOCK position for more than 1 second . It is particularly important to ensure that the 6th turn is done within 1 second.
c. Remove key 1.
3. Using key 2, turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe that security light illuminates (for 1-2 seconds).
- Turn key 2 to LOCK position and remove from steering lock.
4. Using key 1, start engine. Observe that security light illuminates (for 1-2 seconds ) and engine continues to run.
- Turn key 1 to LOCK position and remove from steering lock.
5. Repeat Step 5 with key 3.
6. If there are 4-8 keys (valid and/or new keys), repeat Step 5.
7. Wait for 30 seconds to quit reprogram mode.
8. After reprogramming, clear DTCs of PCM with WDS or equivalent.
Repair Procedure II
Customer has only 1-valid key
NOTE:
- A new key must be cut and used in the procedure.
- You must obtain a codeword to perform this procedure:
a. Locate the immobilizer control unit (under the driver side of dash).
b. Write down the 10-digit serial number found on the control unit.
c. Log onto ESI and access the immobilizer page.
d. Follow on-screen instructions to obtain the code word using the 10-digit serial number from the immobilizer control unit.
NOTE:
^ If no specific time interval is given, each step should be performed within 30 seconds of the previous step.
1. Cut new transponder equipped key(s) if necessary.
2. Using key 1, turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe that security light illuminates (for 1-2 seconds) in instrument cluster.
- Turn key 1 to LOCK position and remove from steering lock.
3. Using key 2, turn ignition switch to ON position then back to LOCK position six times . The key should not remain at ON position or LOCK position for more than 1 second. It is particularly important to ensure that the 6th turn is done within 1 second.
a. Observe flashing of security light (300 ms ON-300 ms OFF) in instrument cluster.
b. Wait for 5 minutes until security light decreases in flashing frequency to 1.2 seconds.
4. Perform Code Word Input Procedure:
NOTE:
^ A code word is composed of eight digits from 1-9 and is part of the immobilizer unit from the manufacturer. Each unit has its own code word. To obtain the code word, you need to have the immobilizer serial number, then ask the distributor.
^ To input the code word into the PCM, turn the ignition key and count the number of flashes of the security light. The calculation of the number of flashes of the security light comes with the timing of the turning of the key.
a. Wait for 5 minutes until security light flashes slowly. (300 ms ON-300 ms OFF --> 1.2 s ON-1.2 s OFF).
b. Input the code word as shown in the example.
c. Turn ignition switch to ON position while security light is off and count three illumination cycles. As the light goes out after the third illumination, turn key to LOCK position.
d. Wait at least one illumination cycle and within 30 seconds of going to LOCK position, turn ignition switch to ON position while security light is off and count one illumination cycle. As the light goes out after the first illumination, turn key to LOCK position.
e. Repeat Step (2) for rest of six digits.
f. When code word is registered correctly in the PCM, the security light stops flashing and illuminates.
NOTE:
If the code word is not input correctly, the security light goes out after all eight digits are input. In this case, refer to the Workshop manual section 09-14 and perform the CODE WORD INPUT ERROR RECOVERY procedure.
g. Observe the security light stops flashing and illuminates.
h. Turn key 2 to ON position. Observe that security light illuminates (for 1-2 seconds).
i. Turn key 2 to LOCK position and remove from steering lock.
5. Using key 2, start engine. Observe that security light illuminates (for 1-2 seconds ) and engine continues to run.
- Turn key 2 to LOCK position and remove from steering lock.
6. Repeat Step 5 with key 1.
7. If there are 3-8 keys (valid and/or new keys), repeat Step 5 for each key.
8. Wait for 30 seconds to quit reprogram mode.
9. After reprogramming, clear DTC of PCM with WDS or equivalent.
C. AUTHORIZED MODIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION
Complete an "Authorized Modification Label" with the RECALL number written on the sticker and affix it to the driver's door. Refer back to the illustration under "A. VEHICLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE".
