CONDITION OF CONCERN

On some 2003 Miata vehicles, the Check Engine Light may erroneously illuminate and a diagnostic trouble code P2404 or P0456 may be stored indicating a problem in the emission control system when no problem exists, or the Check Engine Light may not illuminate when the emission control system is malfunctioning.

SUBJECT VEHICLES

Confirm the vehicle needs the recall by performing a Warranty Vehicle Inquiry on eMDCS.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail on July 28, 2003.

Remind customers to bring all ignition keys when scheduling appointments. Any key not present at time of repair will no longer start the engine.

PARTS INFORMATION

PCM ORDERING

Beginning July 28, dealers will automatically receive PCMs as a CSO order. The quantity is based on vehicle retail sales. Dealers with low Miata retail sales may not receive a shipment. CSO Freight charges will be reimbursed as a sublet on warranty claims. Except for the automatic pre-shipment, extra PCMs for dealer stock will not be available. To order an additional PCM for this recall, fax one form (PCM Order for Owner Campaign) for each PCM requested to MNAO Technical Services. Mazda will ship additional PCMs as CSO orders, and freight will be reimbursed as a sublet on warranty claims.

PCM RETURN INSTRUCTIONS

Return PCMs five days after repair or your entire warranty claim will be subject to debit.

^ Keep the PCM box(es) we shipped to you. Place the PCM you are returning in one of these boxes.

^ Include a copy of the Warranty Parts Request, blue Parts Tag, and Warranty Shipping Record with each PCM.

^ Place all boxed PCMs in an over-pack box with sufficient packing material to avoid shipping damage (maximum weight should not exceed 150 lbs.)

^ Ship the parts using FedEx Priority Overnight Service with 3rd party billing.

^ Complete the FedEx Airbill or ship screen with the shipping and billing information in the right column.

WARRANTY CLAIM PROCESSING INFORMATION

* Remind customers to bring all ignition keys when scheduling appointments. Make sure customers are aware any key not present at time of repair will no longer start the engine. If a customer provides only one (1) ignition key, one (1) additional key may be added to the warranty claim at no charge to the owner. Key cutting is included in the cost of the key.
