2003 MAZDA6 - INOPERATIVE WDS OBD TEST
MODES 1 , 6 , 8 , & 9
APPLICABLE MODE L(S)/VINS
2003 Mazda6 with 2.3L and Automatic Transmission with VINs 1YV*P8OC*35M00001 to M08700
DESCRIPTION
The WDS OBD Test Modes 1, 6, 8, and 9 will not function with the subject vehicle. This may cause incomplete vehicle validation after necessary repair. This may also result in an increase of comebacks.
The problem is caused by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) sending irregular signals to the internal communication buss, and the necessary diagnostic messages from WDS are being corrupted. This is due to an improper TCM calibration. A revised TCM calibration is available for B24.3 or later software.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify concern.
2. Make sure B24.3 or later software is installed into the WDS PTU.
NOTE:
^ It is not necessary to remove any fuses or relays during TCM reprogramming when the WDS screen prompts you to do so. You may accidentally stop power to one of the TCM terminals and cause the TCM to be blanked, or you may receive error messages during the WDS reprogramming procedure.
^ WDS shows the calibration part numbers after programming the TCM.
^ Please be aware that TCM calibration part numbers and file names listed in any Service Bulletin may change due to future releases of WDS software and additional revisions made to those calibrations for service related concerns. When reprogramming a TCM, WDS will always display the "latest" calibration P/N available for that vehicle. If any calibration has been revised/updated to contain new information for a new service concern/issue, it will also contain all previously released calibrations.
^ When performing this procedure, if the WDS PTU is not docked and connected to 115V- 120V, we recommend that a battery charger be installed on the vehicle battery and turned ON to a maximum charge of no more than 20 AMPS to keep the vehicle battery up to capacity. If you exceed 20 AMPS, it will damage the WDS PTU.
3. Reprogram the TCM by performing the WDS "Module Reprogramming" procedure and select "TCM".
NOTE:
You will need to update the PTU first, then install the needed calibration file that WDS shows during TCM reprogramming. Go to "WDS Calibration" on ESI and download the "update" file. If the PTU is not updated to the latest level, the calibration file will not install into the PTU.
4. When TCM programming is complete, you will need to perform the "Self-Test" and retrieve any stored DTCs from the programming procedure.
5. Erase all stored codes and recheck. Only "Cleared DTCs" should appear afier erasing the DTCs.
6. If any DTCs reappear (that are not under the "Cleared DTCs" area), then diagnose them according to the troubleshooting section in the 2003 Mazda6 Workshop Manual.
NOTE:
It is normal for some U **** DTC's to be stored afier reprogramming Mazda6 modules.
7. Start engine and verify no MIL illumination is present.
8. Disconnect DLC cable from vehicle.
9. Road test vehicle to verify MIL does not illuminate.
