Timing Belt Removal and Installation

Upper Engine:

1. Measure the tensioner spring free length. Should be 71.0 mm (2.80 in). If not as specified, replace spring.

2. Install the tensioner and tensioner spring. Temporarily secure the tensioner with the spring fully extended.

3. Verify that all timing marks are as shown.

4. Install the timing belt in order shown.

1. Timing belt pulley
2. No.2 Idler pulley
3. No.1 idler pulley
4. Camshaft pulley
5. Tensioner pulley

5. Install the pulley boss and pulley lock bolt. Turn the crankshaft clockwise 1 and 5/6 times and verify that the timing mark on the timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark A as shown.

6. Loosen the tensioner lock bolt to apply tension on the timing belt. Do not apply any other tension. Torque the tensioner pulley lock bolt to 38 - 51 Nm (28 - 38 ft.lbs).

7. Turn the crankshaft clockwise 2 and 1/6 times and verify that all timing marks line up as shown. The pin on the pulley boss and the "Z" mark on the cam pulley must face upward. If not, loosen the pulley bolt and start again at step 4.

8. Apply moderate (98 N (22 lb. ft)) pressure to the timing belt at the point indicated, belt deflection should be 7.0 - 9.0 mm (0.28 - 0.35 in).
9. If not correct, remove the timing belt and repeat procedure from step 3.

10. Using SST 49 D011 102 or equivalent, torque the crank pulley boss to 57 - 166 Nm (116 - 122 ft.lbs).
11. Install the lower and middle timing belt covers.

12. Install the No.3 engine mount bracket. Using the image above as a guide, torque (1) to 19 - 22 Nm (14 - 16 ft.lbs), torque (2) to 67 - 93 Nm (50 - 68 ft.lbs), and torque (3) to 75 - 104 Nm (55 - 77.3 ft.lbs).
13. Remove the engine support.
14. Install the upper timing belt cover.
15. Install tube brace and dipstick.

16. Verify that the grooves on the valve cover are free of oil, water, and other foreign material and install the new valve cover gasket as shown.

17. Apply silicon sealant to shaded areas as shown approx. 3-4mm thick. You must install the valve cover before the sealant hardens.

18. Install the cylinder head cover and torque the bolts in five or six steps in the order shown. Torque to 6.9 - 10.7 Nm (61 - 95.4 in.lbs).
19. Retorque the bolts in the order shown to 6.9 - 10.7 Nm (61 - 95.4 in.lbs).
20. Install spark plug wires, crank pulley and water pump pulley.
21. Install and adjust drive belts.
22. Install the RH splash shield.
23. Install the RF wheel and reconnect the negative battery cable.
