Connecting Rod: Testing and Inspection

SIDE CLEARANCE
Connecting rod side clearance should be 0.00721 - 0.01290 inch. If clearance exceeds 0.01570 inch, replace connecting rod and cap assembly.

OIL CLEARANCES
Measure oil clearance with connecting rod in BDC position. Do not rotate crankshaft when measuring oil clearances.
1. Position suitable Plastigage atop journals in axial direction, then remove any foreign material and oil from lower connecting rod bearing and connecting rod cap.
2. Install connecting rod bearing in cap, then apply clean engine oil to threads and seat faces of connecting rod cap bolts.
3. Install connecting rod cap, then tighten connecting rod cap bolts as described under Engine Assembly.
4. Remove connecting rod cap, then measure Plastigage at each journal at widest point for smallest clearance and narrowest point for largest clearance.
5. Oil clearance should be 0.0010 - 0.0016 inch. If clearance exceeds 0.0031 inch, grind crankshaft and install undersize bearings.
