Basic Engine Adjustments
NOTE: Prior to beginning any diagnostic strategies, all basic engine adjustments should be verified and corrected as needed.Preparation
1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
2. Shift the selector lever to P.
3. Turn off all electrical loads.
^ Headlight
^ Blower motor
^ Rear window defroster
^ Power steering
^ A/C
4. Wait until the coolant fan stops.
Ignition Timing
1. Perform Preparation. (Refer to above.)
2. Connect a tachometer to the data link connector terminal IG-.
3. Verify that the idle speed is within specification.
Specification: 600 - 700 (650 ± 50) rpm
4. If not as specified, adjust the idle speed.
5. Connect the data link connector terminals TEN and GND with a jumper wire.
6. Verify that the idle speed is within specification.
Specification: 550 - 750 rpm
7. If not as specified, adjust the idle speed.
8. Connect the SST to the ignition timing checking harness with the arrow on the clamp facing the connector.
9. Verify that the ignition timing is within specification.
Specification: BTDC 6 - 8° (7 ± 1°)
10. If not as specified inspect following.
^ On-board diagnosis system
^ Camshaft position sensor
^ Crankshaft position sensor
11. Disconnect a jumper wire.
12. Verify that the ignition timing is within specification.
Specification: BTDC -5 - 17°
Idle Speed
1. Perform Preparation.
2. Connect a tachometer to the data link connector terminal IG-.
3. Verify that the idle speed is within specification.
Specification: 600 - 700 (650 ± 50) rpm
4. If not as specified, adjust the idle speed.
5. Connect the data link connector terminals TEN and GND by using a jumper wire.
6. Adjust the idle speed by turning the air adjusting screw.
Specification: 600 - 700 (650 ± 50) rpm
Caution: The throttle adjusting screw is set at the factory and must not be adjusted. Any adjust will negatively effect the engine performance.
7. Disconnect a jumper wire.
Idle Mixture
1. Perform Preparation.
2. Verify that the idle speed and ignition timing are within specification.
3. Insert an exhaust gas analyzer to the tailpipe.
4. Verify that the CO and HC concentrations are within regulation.
5. If not, inspect following.
^ On-board diagnosis system
^ Heated oxygen sensor
^ Intake-air system
^ Fuel system
^ ESA system
6. If the systems are normal, replace the three way catalytic converter and/or warm up three way catalytic converter.
