EGR Valve Position Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
Provides the engine control module (ECM) with a voltage signal that corresponds with pintle shaft movement in the EGR valve. This allows the ECM to monitor the operation of the EGR control system so it (the ECM) can adjust its output signals for improved engine performance and optimum emissions reductions.

CONSTRUCTION
Sensor is a variable resistor that mounts directly on the EGR valve.

OPERATION
The EGR valve position sensor affects the operation of the following ECM output systems and/or devices:
- EGR control solenoid valves (EGR operation)
- Self-diagnosis checker (diagnostic trouble codes)

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) No.16 will be stored in ECM memory if a failure occurs in the EGR valve position sensor or its circuit.
