On-Board Diagnostics
ON-BOARD DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
The electronically controlled-automatic transaxle (EC-AT) on-board diagnosis system is integrated within the powertrain control module transaxle (PCMT). The on-board diagnosis system checks for malfunctions of the main sensors (input), solenoid valves (output), and the control module itself. Malfunctions or intermittent malfunctions are memorized in the PCMT to be output later as diagnostic trouble codes.

The special service tools (SST)s System Selector and Self-Diagnosis Checker are used to retrieve these service codes. Each malfunction is indicated by a code and a buzzer.
GENERAL NOTES
View: HOLD Indicator Light:
1. The HOLD indicator light does not flash to indicate the diagnostic trouble codes unless "self test" is initiated.
Codes Are Displayed In Numerical Order:
2. If there is more than one malfunction, the codes will be indicated in numerical order, lowest code first.
View: Hold Indicator Light Operation:
3. The HOLD indicator light flashes to indicate the same pattern as the buzzer.
The indicator flashes at a constant frequency if a malfunction is present and the system is not in "self test" mode. The indicator flashes until the malfunction recovers or is repaired. Even if the malfunction is no longer present the diagnostic trouble code is still memorized in the PCMT.
Fail-Safe:
4. The powertrain control module transaxle has a built-in fail-safe function for the throttle position sensor, vehicle speedometer sensor, and all the solenoids.
If a malfunction occurs, the powertrain control module transaxle will control operation of the remaining components according to a preset fail-safe program.
The vehicle may still be driven, although driving performance will be slightly affected.
NOTE: Obtain audio anti-theft access code before disconnecting battery cables.
View: Clearing Codes By Disconnecting The Battery:
5. After repairing a problem, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable for at least 20 seconds, and depress the brake pedal to erase the diagnostic trouble code(s) from the powertrain control module transaxle memory.
