SEAT BACKREST - FRONT

Disassembly

WARNING:
- Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, safety canopy or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
- Inspect the seat side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material before installing the seat side air bag module. If any damage is found, install new components. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- If the seat side air bag cover has been damaged or separated from its mounting, or if the air bag material has been exposed, install a new seat side air bag module. Never try to repair the seat side air bag module. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.


NOTE:
- The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON.
- The supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
- If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seat backrest pad, trim cover and side air bag module must be installed. A new seat backrest frame should be installed, if necessary.
- Driver seat shown, passenger seat similar.

All vehicles
1. Remove the affected seat.
2. Remove the front seat backrest.
3. Pull the head restraint out to end of travel. Press the release button and pull the head restraint rod past its stop position.







4. NOTE: The head restraint guides are not interchangeable, note location for installation.

From inside the front seat backrest, pinch the head restraint guide ends and pull out the 2 head restraint guides.







5. Unzip the side air bag deployment chute.







6. Remove the backrest foam pad and trim cover.
- Separate the trim cover from the backrest foam pad.

7. Remove the 2 side air bag module nuts.
8. Separate the side air bag module from the seat backrest frame.
9. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the side air bag module.

Vehicles with power lumbar
10. Remove and discard the 2 rivets and detach the lumbar motor.
11. Release the lumbar assembly from the bottom of the seat backrest frame.
12. Detach the lumbar assembly from the top of the backrest frame and remove.

Vehicles without power lumbar
13. Remove the backrest support.

Assembly

WARNING:
- Check the seat side air bag deployment chute for damage. The deployment chute must not be repaired. If there is any damage to the deployment chute, a new seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed as a unit. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- If the seat side air bag module deployment chute is not correctly positioned and closed, the seat side air bag module may not deploy correctly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.


Vehicles without power lumbar
1. Install the backrest support.

Vehicles with power lumbar
2. Install the lumbar assembly.
- Attach the top of the lumbar assembly to the backrest frame.
- Attach the bottom of the lumbar assembly to the lower backrest frame retainer and route the cable and motor into position.

3. Install the lumbar motor and 2 new rivets.

All vehicles

4. WARNING:
- Inspect the seat side air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad for any foreign material. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- If the seat side air bag cover has been damaged or separated from its mounting, or if the air bag material has been exposed, install a new seat side air bag module. Never try to repair the seat side air bag module. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.


Connect the side air bag module electrical connector.

5. WARNING:
- Inspect the seat side air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad for any foreign material. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- Before installing the seat side air bag module/deployment chute assembly:
- Inspect the side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material.
- Remove any foreign material from the mounting surfaces of the deployment chute, the seat backrest frame mounting bracket and the air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad.
- Install new parts if damaged.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.


Position the side air bag module onto the front seat backrest frame mounting bracket.

6. NOTE: Install new side air bag module nuts if installing a new side air bag module. If the existing side air bag module is being reinstalled, use the existing nuts.

Install the 2 side air bag module nuts.
- Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).

7. Attach the trim cover to the backrest foam pad.
8. Reposition the seat backrest pad and trim cover to the seat backrest frame.

9. WARNING:
- Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- Check the seat side air bag deployment chute for damage. The deployment chute must not be repaired. If there is any damage to the deployment chute, a new seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed as a unit. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- If the seat side air bag module deployment chute is not correctly positioned and closed, the seat side air bag module may not deploy correctly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.


Position the air bag deployment chute.
1 Insert the outboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat backrest pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the seat backrest frame.
2 Insert the inboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat backrest pad and the side air bag module from the inboard side of the seat backrest frame.







10. NOTE: Be sure the side air bag deployment chute is correctly positioned before proceeding to the next step.

Zip the air bag deployment chute completely closed, then position the zipper tail at the top of the air bag deployment chute into the seat backrest opening.
- The air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the seat backrest frame.
- Align the air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it covers the length of the side air bag module, but does not cover the top or the bottom of the side air bag module.







11. NOTE: The head restraint guides are not interchangeable. Make sure the guides are in their correct location.

Install the 2 head restraint guides.

12. Push the head restraint guide tab and install the head restraint.







13. Install the front seat backrest.
14. Install the affected seat.
