Information and Message Center
Information And Message CenterThe message center display is a green vacuum fluorescent, fixed format display. The message center display is integral to the instrument cluster.
The message center is controlled by the four message center switches (FUEL, RESET, STATUS, and SETUP).
Principles of Operation
The message center is an integral part of the instrument cluster. The message center communicates with the powertrain control module (PCM), front electronic module (FEM), rear electronic module (REM), and anti-lock brake system (ABS)/traction control (TC)/stability assist module over the SCP network. As a technician, it is important to understand:
- where the input (command) originates from.
- all information (messages) necessary in order for a feature to operate.
- which module(s) receive(s) the input or command message.
- does the module which received the input (message) control the output of the feature, or does it output a message over the SCP communication network to another module?
- which module controls the output of the feature.
Display Information
The display modes are:
- fuel (average fuel economy, distance to empty)
- setup
- system status
- warning
- temporary alert
The message center information can be selected by pressing any of the following four buttons:
- FUEL
- RESET
- SETUP
- STATUS
The setup display and the status display will time-out and default to the fuel blank display function. The temporary alert display will interrupt the current display to show the status of an event that has just happened. The warning display interrupts the current display until cleared or reset by the driver.
Status Displays
The status displays are timed modes and default back to the fuel blank display function. The status display modes are:
- oil life %
- AC air filter life %
- charging system
- low oil
- engine temperature
- brake fluid level

- passenger door
- driver rear door
- passenger rear door
- luggage compartment lid
- headlamps
- front turn lamps
- side repeater lamps
- rear turn lamps
- stoplamps

- change oil now (0%)
- change oil soon (1%-5%)
- low oil level
- low washer fluid level
- low brake fluid level
- check head lamps
- check brake lamps
- check tail lamps
- check front turn lamps
- check rear turn lamps
- change A/C air filter soon
- luggage compartment lid

- apply park brake
The single cycle warning messages will display once whenever the key is turned to ON or a fault occurs in a system and can be cleared by pressing the RESET button.
The repetitive warning messages are:
- check charging system
- low fuel level
- check transmission
- transmission overheated
The repetitive warning messages are displayed at a fixed interval whenever the key switch is turned ON or is in the ACC position. To remove a repetitive warning message, press the RESET button. The message will only recur after 10 minutes or until the warning condition is corrected.
The non-resettable warning messages displays whenever the key switch is turned to ON and a fault occurs in a system. The fault must be corrected to clear the non-resettable warninresettable.
The non-resettable warning messages are:
- stop engine safely
- driver door ajar
- passenger door ajar
- driver rear door ajar
- passenger rear door ajar
- decklid ajar switch

Temporary Alert Messages
The temporary alert display will interrupt the current display to show the status of an event that has just happened. The temporary alert messages are:
