Special Tool(s)

Removal and Installation

CAUTION: Some of the following references contain referrals to other procedures that also must be completed. These procedures must be carried out in their entirety in order to complete this procedure.

1. Remove the LH camshafts.
2. Remove the LH exhaust manifold.
3. Remove the lower intake manifold.
4. Remove the components in the order indicated in the illustration and table.

5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Items 9,10 and 11: Cylinder Head Gasket, Cylinder Head and Cylinder Head Bolts Removal Note





1. Remove the ground strap.





2. Install the four crossmember bolts.





3. Remove the special tool.

4. NOTE:The straightedge used must be flat within 0.0051 mm (0.0002 in) per foot of tool length.

Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge and feeler gauge. The cylinder head must not have depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in) across a 38.1 mm (1.5 in) square area, or scratches more than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in) deep.

Items 9,10 and 11: Cylinder Head Bolts, Cylinder Head, and Cylinder Head Gasket Installation Note

1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.

CAUTION: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.

NOTE: LH and RH cylinder head gaskets are not interchangeable.

Using a new cylinder head gasket and bolts install the LH cylinder head and loosely install the bolts.

LH:





2. Tighten the bolts in six stages in the sequence shown.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 2: Rotate 90 degrees.
- Stage 3: Back out a minimum of one full turn (360 degrees).
- Stage 4: Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 5: Rotate 90 degrees.
- Stage 6: Rotate all bolts an additional 90 degrees.





3. Install the special tool.





4. Remove the four crossmember bolts.





5. Install the ground strap.
