Side Air Bag Module

REMOVAL

WARNING:
- Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- Carry a live side air bag module with the air bag and tear seam pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- Do not set a live side air bag module down on the cover tear seam. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
- Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
- Side air bag modules with damaged covers must be replaced.
- The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.


NOTE:
- If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side air bag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the air bag system must be deactivated.
- Restraint system diagnostic tools MUST be installed under the seats in the seat side air bag (if equipped) and safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) to floor connectors.
- Diagnostics or repairs are not to be carried out on a seat equipped with a seat side air bag with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose or repair a seat concern when equipped with a seat side air bag, the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed in the seat side air bag electrical connectors. The restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road.
- The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
- If a side air bag deployment took place a new seat back pad, trim cover, and side air bag module must be installed. Install a new seat back frame if necessary.
- When installing a new side air bag after deployment, refer to Seats for additional information concerning the installation of a new side air bag.
- Repair is made by installing a new part only. If the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.
- The driver seat is shown, the passenger seat is similar.
- A seat side air bag module is shown, a seat side thorax air bag module is similar.
- A seat with climate control and power lumbar is shown, all others are similar.

1. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

The first row side impact sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillars.

The second row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the C-pillars.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.

Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

3. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the seat removal and installation procedure.

Remove the seat on the side with the affected side air bag module.

4. Remove the components in the order indicated in the illustration and table.

INSTALLATION







1. WARNING: Front seat back trim covers installed on seats equipped with side air bags cannot be repaired, they are to be replaced (cleaning is permissible).

CAUTION: When removing the seat back trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the seat back trim panel J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat back trim panel.

NOTE: If installing a new side air bag module, use new retaining nuts. If the same side air bag module is to be reused then reuse the side air bag module nuts.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the seat removal and installation procedure.

NOTE: Make sure the battery negative cable is still disconnected before continuing with the installation portion of this procedure.

Install the seat on the side with the affected side air bag.

3. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.

Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

4. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure

5. Check the active restraint system for correct operation.

Item 1: Seat Back Trim Panel Removal Note







1. CAUTION: Inspect the seat back trim panel for damage. If the J-hooks are damaged or the pin-type retainers remain in the seat frame, replace the panel.

Remove the seat back trim panel.
1 Holding the panel at bottom center, pull rearward (not up) until both lower attachments are disengaged.
2 While pushing in at the top of the panel, slide the panel down to disengage the upper J-hooks.
3 Remove the panel.
- Inspect the lower panel attachments. If either pin-type retainer remain on the seat frame, replace the panel.
- Inspect the upper panel attachments. If either J-hook is cracked or damaged, replace the panel.
- Before installing the panel, replace both pin-type retainers.

Item 2: Seat Back Trim Cover Removal Note







1. If equipped with climate control, release the trim cover J-clip over the climate control duct.

Item 3: Connector Removal Note







1. Disconnect the electrical connectors and separate all wire harness pin-type retainers from the lower seat back frame.

1. If equipped, position the climate control duct away from the seat.

1. Detach all the seat back trim cover J-clips and the pin-type retainers.

Item 9: Seat Back Pad Removal Note







1. With one hand on the side air bag module, position the seat back trim cover and pad forward enough to access the side air bag module.

Item 11: Connector Installation Note

1. CAUTION: Make sure the correct seat mounted air bag module is being used. The seat side air bag module and the seat side thorax air bag module electrical connectors are unique and will not interchange. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the air bag module. Do not alter or force the electrical connector into the seat mounted air bag module.

Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the seat side air bag module or the seat side thorax air bag module and connect the electrical connector.

Item 10: Side Air Bag Module Installation Note







1. WARNING:
- Inspect the mounting surfaces of the side air bag module for any foreign objects before installing the side air bag module. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.
- Inspect the side air bag deployment chute and the side air bag cavity in the seat back pad for any foreign objects. If any foreign objects are found remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.
- Before installing the side air bag module into the deployment chute, check it for damage and foreign objects. Install a new air bag module if it is damaged. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.
- If the air bag cover has separated or the air bag material has been exposed, install a new side air bag module. Do not attempt to repair the air bag module. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.
- Check the side air bag deployment chute for damage. The deployment chute must not be repaired. If there is any damage to the deployment chute, the seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed new as a unit.
- If the air bag deployment chute is not correctly positioned, the side air bag may not deploy correctly.
- Inspect the mounting surfaces of the deployment chute and the seat back frame mounting bracket for any foreign objects, before installing the side air bag module/deployment chute assembly. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.


NOTE: The alignment pin will only allow the side air bag module to be installed to the seat back mounting bracket one way.

Position the side air bag module into the deployment chute.
- Position the side air bag module into the deployment chute with the alignment pin offset to the top and the electrical connector to the bottom of the seat back. This will position the alignment pin correctly when the side air bag module and deployment chute are mounted to the seat back frame mounting bracket.
- The side air bag module mounting studs must come through the deployment chute stud openings.

Item 1: Seat Back Trim Panel Installation Note

1. CAUTION: Inspect the seat back trim panel for damage. If the J-hooks are damaged or the pin-type retainers remain in the seat frame, replace the panel.

Align the seat back trim panel J-hooks to the seat back frame at the top and engage the pin-type retainers at the bottom of the seat back frame.
- Inspect the lower panel attachments. If either pin-type retainer remain in the seat frame, replace the panel.
- Inspect the upper panel attachments. If either J-hook is cracked or damaged, replace the panel.
- Before installing the panel, replace both pin-type retainers.
