System Description

The telematics system consists of the following:
^ Global Positioning Sensor (GPS) antenna
^ telematics control switch assembly
^ telematics control module
^ cellular phone handset
^ handset battery
^ handset holder
^ steering column shroud mounted microphone
^ steering wheel switch controls
^ Portable Support Electronics (PSE) module
^ glass mounted cellular phone antenna
^ antenna cable
^ audio unit controls
^ audio unit
^ Restraint Control Module (RCM)

The telematics system allows a user to request emergency assistance (police, ambulance, fire, wrecker) or roadside assistance. Also, if any of the vehicle's air bags are deployed while the telematics control module is powered ON, the system automatically issues a call for emergency assistance.

The portable cellular phone system has two operating modes: hands-free and portable. Hands-free operation mode allows phone operation without picking up the phone. It uses the vehicle audio system speakers to emit sound and the steering column shroud mounted microphone to speak into. Portable operation mode allows phone usage while it is disconnected from the handset holder. The phone is powered up by its battery when used as a portable.
