REMOVAL
WARNING:
- ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIRBAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
- NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
1. Prepare the vehicle for seat backrest recliner removal.
1 Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.
PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.
THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.
TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).
2 Deactivate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.
3 Remove the affected seat.
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.
2. Remove the seat backrest trim panel.
1 Remove the screw.
2 Carefully fold the seat backrest cover panel to release the tension on the upper J-hooks.
3 Release the upper J- hooks.
4 Release the lower tabs.
CAUTION: When removing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat backrest trim panel.
NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers must be installed. Cleaning is permissible.
3. Release the four J-clips.
4. Remove the backrest handle.
5. Release the J-clips.
6. Release the J-clips.
7. Remove the bolts.
8. Remove the bolts.
INSTALLATION
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS AND NOTES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE REMOVAL PROCEDURE.
1. Position the recliner assembly to the seat frame.
- Install the bolts.
2. Install the bolts.
3. Fasten the J-clips.
4. Install the backrest recliner handle.
5. Fasten the J-clips.
6. Install the seat backrest trim panel.
1 Fasten the lower tabs.
2 Carefully fold the seat backrest cover panel to apply tension for the upper J-hooks.
3 Fasten the upper J-hooks.
4 Install the screw.
7. Restore the vehicle to operating condition.
1 Install the affected seat.

2 Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.
3 With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
WARNING: THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.
4 Check the restraint system for correct operation.
