Inspection and Verification (Start Testing Here)
1. Verify the customer concern by operating the instrument cluster to duplicate the condition by observing the indicators and gauges to determine if they are operating properly with the ignition switch:^ In RUN and the engine OFF.
^ In START before the ignition switch is released.
^ In RUN and the engine running.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
Mechanical
^ Insufficient washer fluid level
^ Damaged fuel tank
^ Insufficient engine coolant level
^ Damaged accessory drive belt
^ Insufficient engine oil level
^ Insufficient brake fluid level
Electrical
^ Blown fuse in the fuse junction panel:
- Fuse 26 (10 A)
- Fuse 28 (10 A)
- Fuse 5 (10 A)
^ Damaged circuit wiring
^ Damaged switches or sensors
3. If the inspection reveals any obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, repair as required.
4. If the concern remains after inspection, connect the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester to the Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the NGS menu. If NGS does not communicate with the vehicle:
^ check that the program card is properly installed.
^ check the connections to the vehicle.
^ check the ignition switch position.
5. If the NGS still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the New Generation STAR Tester manual.
6. Perform the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If NGS responds with:
^ CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Module Communications Network.
^ NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Virtual Image Electronic Instrument Cluster (VIC), go to Pinpoint Test B. B: No Communication With Virtual Image Instrument Cluster
^ NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Lighting Control Module (LCM), go to Pinpoint Test C. C: No Communication Can't Perform LCM ON Demand Self Test
^ SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and perform self test diagnostics for the VIC and LCM.
7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the LCM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index or the VIC Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.
8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
