Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair






1. Remove gear selector handle.
2. Pull front finish panel up to disengage panel from two locating clips.
3. Disconnect finish panel electrical connectors, then remove gear selector trim panel.
4. Remove two remaining front finish panel retaining screws.
5. Open console door and remove cover in bottom of tray to gain access to two console to rear floor bracket retaining screws. Remove screws.
6. Slide console rearward to remove.
7. Remove lefthand lower instrument panel trim and steering column lower shroud.
8. Remove steering column retaining nuts and lower column to floor, then disconnect solenoid electrical connector.
9. Remove interlock cable retaining screws from steering column.
10. Guide interlock cable out from under carpeting.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
a. Torque steering column retaining nuts to 15-24 ft lb.
b. Torque cable retaining screws at steering column and at shifter to 12-18 in lb.
c. Test cable for proper operation. Ignition key should only be removable with shift lever in PARK. Shifter should be locked in PARK with ignition key removed, or with key in ON position and brake not applied. Shifter should release when brakes are applied.
