Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair






1. Remove console finish panel retaining screw.
2. Move transmission selector lever arm and support rearward.
3. Remove transmission gear shift opening seal.
4. Remove console panel to console panel bracket attaching screws.
5. Disconnect console electrical connectors, then remove console panel.
6. Remove ignition/shifter interlock cable to shifter retaining screw, then interlock/shifter cable from shifter interlock cam.
7. Remove lower steering column shroud.
8. Remove steering column retaining nuts and lower steering column to floor.
9. Disconnect actuator/solenoid electrical connector.
10. Remove ignition/shifter interlock cable to steering column attaching screws.
11. Remove solenoid from solenoid retainer bracket.
12. Pull ignition/shifter interlock cable out from under instrument panel and unhook it from retaining bracket.
13. Roll back carpet and slide cable out.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
a. Torque cable to steering column retaining screws to 19-25 in lb.
b. Torque steering column retaining nuts to 14 ft lb.
c. Check for proper interlock operation. Ignition key should be removable only with gearshift lever in PARK. Gearshift lever should be locked in PARK position with key removed.
