^ GAUGE - TEMPERATURE (ANALOG) - LOW READINGS BECAUSE OF INCOMPLETE GROUNDING

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1993 MARK VIII

ISSUE:
The analog temperature gauge may exhibit low readings or become inoperative. This occurs because of loss of the system grounding at the engine due to paint on the stud of the coolant bypass tube.

ACTION:
Remove the coolant bypass tube and cover accessories. Clean all surfaces and remove all paint on the ground stud and coolant bypass support brace to establish a clean ground path. Refer to the following service procedure.

1. Disconnect the battery ground wire.

2. Remove the engine cover shield front half.

3. Disconnect the accessory drive belt.

4. Disconnect the spark plug wires from coil packs (both sides).

5. Disconnect spark plug wire keepers from the alternator bracket and position the wires out of the way.

6. Remove the four (4) alternator mounting bolts and position the alternator (with upper bracket) to the side.





7. Remove the nut from the cross over tube bracket as shown in Figure 1.

8. Using a wire brush or other abrasive tool...

a. Clean off the painted surface on the ground stud.

b. Clean the metal surface on the cross over tube support brace, Figure 1.

9. Reinstall the sender ground wire and then the ground nut.

10. Tighten the nut to 8-12 N-m (5.9-8.8 lb.ft.).

11. Confirm that the temperature gauge operates properly.
