Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Raise vehicle.
2. Remove two nuts retaining rear muffler inlet flange.
3. Disengage muffler inlet flange from flange studs.
4. Remove nuts retaining converter Y pipe to exhaust outlet pipe frame bracket.
5. Remove nuts retaining Y pipe flanges to the three-way converter outlet flanges.
6. Slide converter Y pipe and muffler inlet pipe rearward and disengage from exhaust outlet pipe frame bracket studs. Remove converter Y pipe and muffler inlet pipe.
7. Remove front muffler inlet pipe from converter Y pipe.
8. Remove converter flange nuts at exhaust manifold and remove converter assembly.
INSTALLATION
1. Install converter assemblies to exhaust manifold studs and install flange nuts. DO NOT tighten.
2. Engage muffler inlet pipe until converter Y pipe is bottomed into inlet pipe. Position exhaust clamp. DO NOT tighten.
3. Engage converter Y pipe with exhaust outlet pipe frame bracket studs. Slide converter Y pipe and muffler inlet forward.
4. Position converter Y pipe inlet flanges to three-way catalytic converters and install new retaining nuts. DO NOT tighten.
5. Install new retaining nuts on exhaust outlet pipe outlet pipe frame bracket studs. DO NOT tighten.
6. Align converters, Y pipe and muffler inlet pipe.
- Tighten converter assemblies at exhaust manifold studs to 17-23 lb. ft. (23.3-31.7 Nm).
- Tighten exhaust clamp to 26-33 lb. ft. (34-46 Nm).
- Tighten retaining nuts to 17-23 lb. ft. (23.3-31.7 Nm).
7. Support front muffler by exhaust outlet pipe frame brackets, install rear muffler inlet flange overmuffler inlet pipe flange studs. install retaining nuts. DO NOT tighten.
8. Align rear muffler assembly.
- Tighten retaining nuts to 22-30 lb. ft. (29.7-40.3 Nm).
9. START engine and check for leaks.
