^ REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM - ERRATIC DOOR LOCK OPERATION

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1993 MARK VIII

ISSUE:
Water leaks may occur at the upper back/lower backlite corner area resulting in water in the trunk or on the remote keyless entry module. This may cause erratic door lock operation. These leaks are caused by voids in urethane sealer to the backlite, or misplaced seals on the package tray or quarter panel.

ACTION:
Use the following procedure to eliminate water leaks in the upper back area. (if door lock operation is erratic, replace the keyless entry module after eliminating the leak.)

1. Open the decklid and pull back the luggage compartment left hand and right hand trim panel to view the inner panel of interior sheet metal.

2. Run water from a hose.

a. Start at the lowest possible point on the drain trough.

b. Move slowly upward to isolate the leak.

NOTE:
IF THE LEAK CANNOT BE DETECTED BY RUNNING WATER UP THE DRAIN TROUGH, TRY RUNNING WATER DOWN THE TROUGH AND ALSO UNDER THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE BACKLITE MOULDING IN THE CORNER AREA.

3. If the water leak is located at the weatherstrip flange, proceed as follows:

a. Remove the weatherstrip.

b. Inspect the flange for deformation and improper sealing where the package tray metal and drain trough form the flange radius.

c. Repair or reseal with clear silicone sealer (D6AZ-19562-AA).

4. If the water leaks at the drain trough, proceed as follows:

a. Inspect for weld burn-throughs and sealer voids.

b. Reseal with clear silicone sealer (D6AZ-19562-AA).

5. If the water leak is at the quarter panel, take the following action.

a. Inspect for wrinkles in the sealer strip along the quarter panel seam.

b. Reseal with clear silicone sealer (D6AZ-19562-AA).

6. If the leak occurs in the backlite corner, proceed as follows:

a. Lift the Rehau moulding and inject a high viscosity sealer (Essex U400 Urethane) between the quarter panel rabbet and the backlite urethane.

b. If this fails to seal the backlite, it will have to be completely removed and resealed.

7. Retest for water leaks with a hose.

8. Reinstall the removed components.
