Backup Lamp: Description and Operation

With the Ignition Switch in RUN, voltage is present at the Backup Lamp/Neutral Safety Switch through Fuse 5 and circuit 298 (P/O).

With the gear selector in REVERSE, the Backup Lamp contacts in the Backup Lamp/Neutral Safety Switch close. Current flows through Fuse 5, the Backup Lamp/Neutral Safety Switch and the Backup Lamps to ground. The lamps illuminate.

The Backup Lamp/Neutral Safety Switch is also part of the Keyless Entry and Electronic Day/Night Mirror circuits. When the Backup contacts close momentarily as the gear selector is moved through REVERSE, the Keyless Entry Module automatically locks the doors (if other conditions are met). Closed Backup contacts also disable the Electronic Day/Night Mirror.
