Trunk / Liftgate: Description and Operation

Closed, System at Rest

With the trunk lid latched and pulled down and the system at rest, switch positions are: Trunk Lid Pull-down Switch in "lid latched" position, Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly striker switches in position "B" and the Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly limit switch in the "lid fully closed" position.

Opening

When the trunk lid is unlatched and lifted, two switches change position: the Trunk Lid Pull-down Switch contacts move to the "lid unlatched" position, and the Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly limit switch closes. If the Ignition Switch is in START or RUN, the Trunk Lid Pull-down Switch grounds circuit 486 (BR/W) and the Trunk Ajar Indicator turns on. With the Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly limit switch closed, current flows through the In-Line Circuit Breaker, circuit 517 (BK/W), the Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly striker switches "B" contacts, the striker motor and the limit switch to ground. The striker motor runs to extend the striker. When the striker is fully extended, the Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly striker switches snap to position "A" and the striker motor stops. The system is ready for closing.

Closing

When the trunk lid is closed and latched, the Trunk Lid Pull-down Switch contacts move to the "lid latched" position. If the Ignition Switch is in START or RUN, the Trunk Lid Pull-down Switch ungrounds circuit 486 (BR/W) and the Trunk Ajar Indicator turns off. With the Trunk Lid Pull-down Switch in the "lid unlatched" position, current flows through the In-Line Circuit Breaker, circuit 517 (BK/W), the Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly striker switches "A" contacts, the striker motor and the Trunk Lid Pull-down Switch to ground. The striker motor runs to retract the striker and pull down the trunk lid. When the trunk lid is nearly closed, it touches the Trunk Lid Pull-down limit switch arm and moves the contacts to the "lid fully closed" position. The striker motor continues to run. When the striker is fully retracted, the Trunk Lid Pull-down Assembly striker switches snap to position "B" and the striker motor stops. The system is ready for another cycle.
