Displaying and Reading Trouble Codes

NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures to retrieve or clear trouble codes without the Super Star tester.

Fig. 10 On-board Self-test Service Code Index:

The ABS electronic control module is capable of performing a self-test using Star tester 007-00017 or Super Star tester 007-00019 or equivalents. If the Star tester is not available, the ABS Quick Check sheet can be used as described further on.
The ABS control module monitors system operation and stores up to seven different service codes in its memory. However, it cannot store two services codes with the same first digit. For example: the module cannot store a code 25 and a code 26 at the same time (it can store a code 25 and a code 35). The code 25 is stored first. It must be serviced, the memory must be cleared and the vehicle operated before the code 26 can be stored.
A valve service code will override any stored service code during Self-Test. The condition must be serviced before any other codes can be displayed. After the valve has been serviced, the Self-Test can be run and any stored codes will be displayed. If no codes are displayed, the system has passed the Self-Test. If any codes are displayed during the Self-Test, refer to the Self-Test Code Index, Fig. 10. The index will direct you to a specific pinpoint test to be run. After the pinpoint tests have been completed, the components should be serviced. After servicing these codes, repeat the Self-Test.
After all codes have been displayed and serviced, the memory will be erased by driving the vehicle above approximately 25 mph. If the Self-Test has not been completed and all codes displayed, the memory cannot be erased.

Star Tester Connection & Battery Check

1. Turn ignition switch to Off position.
2. Lower righthand module panel in luggage compartment.
3. Connect Star tester electrical connector to vehicle connector located near the electronic controller assembly.
4. Turn power switch on righthand side of Star tester to On. A steady 00 or a blank screen will appear signifying that the tester is ready to start the Self-Test and receive service codes. If the message LO BAT appears in the upper lefthand corner of the read-out display and stays On, replace the Star tester's 9 volt battery before continuing with the Self-Test. The message LO BAT will appear momentarily when the power switch is turned to the Off position.
5. With the ignition switch in the Off position, push the Self-Test button in the center of the Star tester. Push the button again. This deactivates the Self-Test sequence.
6. If the Star tester passes the Self-Test (a 00 or blank screen with button in TEST position), proceed with the On-Board Self-Test. If any service codes appear during the Self-Test, refer to the On-Board Self-Test Service Code Index, Fig. 10. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS for Pinpoint Tests.
