EEC IV Quick Test - Alternate Diagnostic Procedure

87-7-14 DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE USING MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL)
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 MARK VII, LINCOLN TOWN CAR
ISSUE: 1988 Mark VII and Lincoln Town Car vehicles are equipped with a malfunction indicator light (MIL) that can be used to output EEC IV service codes.
ACTION: If service is required, the following diagnostic procedure may be used. This method of EEC IV Quick Test will be included in the 1988 Engine/Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H. Until the 1988 Shop Manuals are available, the Quick Test steps in Section 16 of the 1987 Engine/Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H should be used along with the procedure modifications that follow.

Self-Test
To Initiate Self-Test Using the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL):
1. Turn key off.
2. Connect a jumper wire from the Self-Test Input Connector to the Signal Return Pin of the Self-Test Connector.
3. Turn the key on.The service codes will be flashed on the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
4. Code output format will be the same as previous EEC IV vehicles.
To Clear Continuous Memory Service Codes Using the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL):
1. Initiate the Self-Test as described above.
2. During service code output (flashing MIL), de-activate Self-Test by removing the jumper wire between the Self-Test Input (STI) Connector and the Signal Return Pin on the Self-Test Connector.
3. The continuous service codes will be erased from the processor's memory.
NOTE: To make sure that the EEC IV Quick Test and diagnostics procedure are performed correctly, the technician MUST follow the proper test sequence and notes as described in Section 16 of the 1987 Engine/Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H, and its supplement.
