MESSAGE CENTER - INTERMITTENT "CHECK ENGINE/CHECK DCL" DISPLAYED - 14401 WIRE HARNESS CHAFING

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE: A message center that intermittently displays the "CHECK ENGINE/CHECK DCL" light and a temperature gauge that only displays the two (2) top and two (2) bottom graphic bars may be caused by the 14401 wire harness chafing on the transmission NVH brace and shorting to ground.

ACTION: Repair the 14401 wire harness and secure it to the 14516 wire harness with a tie strap. Refer to the following procedure for service details.


1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

2. Remove the battery and battery tray from the vehicle.

3. Locate the light gray 8-pin connector (C-169) that connects the 12A581 wire harness to the 14401 wire harness. Refer to the 1988 Continental EVTM, page 7 for the exact location.

4. Check the 14401 wire harness starting at the C-169 connector back to the dash panel for chafing.

NOTE: MAKE SURE TO CHECK CLOSELY AROUND THE TRANSMISSION NVH BRACE.

5. Repair the 14401 wire harness as required.

6. Secure the 14401 wire harness to the 14516 wire harness with a tie strap to keep it away from the transmission NVH brace, Figure 2.

7. Install the battery and battery tray in the vehicle.

8. Install the air cleaner assembly.
