Subject: Safety Recall 88S51 - 1988 Continental Engine Compartment and Ignition Switch Wiring


AFFECTED VEHICLES: All 1988 Continentals built from Job #1 through July 1, 1988.

REASONS FOR RECALL:

Two separate concerns are addressed:

1) ELECTRICAL WIRING -- ENGINE COMPARTMENT

The black plastic convolute tubing covering the 12A581 wiring harness, located above the rear exhaust manifold, may not withstand extremely hot underhood temperatures. These temperatures may cause the convolute to melt and drip onto the rear exhaust manifold. This condition could result in an underhood fire.

2) ELECTRICAL WIRING - IGNITION SWITCH

An electrical wire to the ignition switch, which controls the electrical power to the brake pump motor, the heater and A/C blower motor, the radio and the turn signals, may overheat and temporarily lose contact with the switch terminal. Should this occur while the car is being operated, the brake pump motor will stop running but the car will still brake normally one to five times after the red brake warning light comes on and before rear brake function and power assist to the front brakes is lost. Because of the decrease in braking ability, a vehicle crash could result.
