HANDLE - OUTSIDE FRONT DOOR - LOOSE
Article No. 88-12-1
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 CONTINENTAL
ISSUE: Loose front door handles may be caused by door handle pivots that come loose and fall out. The door handle pivots may not have been crimped at the time of installation, allowing the handle to separate from the door handle housing assembly.
ACTION: To correct this, crimp the door handle pivots. Refer to the following service procedure.
1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield. Refer to 1988 Continental Shop Manual, Section 45-03 for removal procedure.
2. Remove door outside handle and housing assembly. Refer to 1988 Continental Shop Manual, Section 44-16 for removal procedure.
3. If the pivot is loose or disengaged, reinstall the pivot. If the pivot is missing, obtain new pivot (E80Y-54224A20-A) and install.
NOTE: EACH OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE HAS TWO (2) PIVOTS.
FIGURE 1:
4. Position the outside door handle on a flat surface with one (1) end of the pivot exposed and strike it with a hammer to crimp the end of the pivot, Figure 1.
5. If necessary, repeat Step 4 on the other end of the pivot.
6. Install the outside door handle and check for proper operation.
7. If necessary, repeat this repair for opposite outside door handle.
