Fuel Tank Vent - Fuel Gauge Inaccuracy
83ford17 Article No. 83-10-14FUEL SYSTEM GAUGE WILL NOT INDICATE "FULL" WHEN FUEL TANK IS FULL
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 CONTINENTAL
CALIBRATION: 3-22D-R0
Pressure in the tank could slightly distort the fuel tank on the top surface which could result in the fuel gauge not reading full or concerns of insufficient fuel tank capacity. Replacing the vapor vent tube with a larger diameter tube will reduce pressure and resolve the condition.
1. Verifying proper operation of instrument cluster fuel gauge (Steps D1, D2 and D3).
2. Insure vapor vent tube is 1/4" diameter tube, replace if required (Step D4).
3. Check fuel tank for deformation and replace if necessary (Step D5).

D.2 FUEL SENDER CHECK
^ Turn the ignition switch to off.
^ Remove fuel tank and fuel sender.
CAUTION: FOLLOW PROCEDURE SPECIFIED IN SECTION 24-50 OF THE 1983 CAR SHOP MANUAL - POWERTRAIN FOR REMOVAL OF THE FUEL TANK.
^ Check fuel sender for free rod movement and reconnect electrical connector to sender.
^ Turn the ignition switch to On.
^ Verify zero fuel bars are displayed at empty stop and 11 bars are displayed on the fuel gauge at full stop.
^ Verify empty stop resistance is between 12 and 18 ohms and full stop resistance is between 150 and 166 ohms.
OK Go to D.4.
Not OK Replace sender and go to D.3.
D.3 FUEL SENDER CHECK - 2
^ At the fuel sender, repeat measurements taken in D.2.
OK Go to D.5.
Not OK Service fuel sender wiring and
go to D.4.
D.4 VAPOR TUBE CHECK
^ Check and verify that the vapor tube is 1/4" diameter. The 1/4" vapor tube will be connected to the vapor valve and carbon cannister with 1/4" rubber hose. The 3/16" vapor tube will be connected directly to the vapor valve and carbon cannister.
OK Go to D.5.
Not OK Install 1/4" vapor tube as
follows:
- Disconnect the 3/16" diameter vapor tube in the fuel return and vapor tube assembly, on the vehicle from the carbon cannister, and cut way the 3/16" vapor tube at the first clip location. Then disconnect from the vapor valve.
- Install 1/4" diameter vapor tube Part No. E25Y- 9A228-A to the fuel return, and vapor tube assembly on the vehicle as follows:
- -Install 1/4" diameter rubber fuel vapor tube, service part no. E1PZ-9324-C, 16 inches long, to the vapor valve on the fuel tank. Route in trough on tank top.
- -Install 1/4" diameter rubber fuel vapor tube, service part no. E1PZ-9324-C, 16 inches long, (12 inches long for altitude engine calibration vehicles), to the carbon cannister. Route rearward to the outboard side of the frame rail same as removed 3/16" vapor tube.
- - Attach the 1/4" vapor tube Part No. E25Y- 9A228-A to vehicle along the fuel return and vapor tube assembly, using fifteen chicken-band straps. Locate the vapor tube from front to rear of vehicle by first connecting the vapor tube to the rubber hose from the cannister. Second, route the tube rearward attaching to the fuel, return and vapor tube assembly with chicken-band straps such that the vapor tube fits snugly to the tube assembly.
- - Leave the disconnected 3/16" vapor tube in the tube assembly on the vehicle. Go to D.5.
D.5 FUEL TANK CHECK
Check fuel tank top for evidence of deformation between the rib pattern. The deformation will have the appearance of 1/4" - 1/2" "humps" between the ribs. The "humps" will appear between the first and second ribs near the left rear corner of the fuel tank and may continue along a diagonal line across the tank top with the "humps" between each set of ribs toward the fuel sender. If it is not clear that the tank is deformed, the ribs can be checked for flatness with a straight-edge.
OK Reinstall fuel tank using the pro-
cedures described in Section
24-50 of the 1983 Car Shop
Manual - Powertrain.
Not OK Replace fuel tank with a new
service fuel tank using procedures described in Section 24-50 of the 1983 Car Shop Manual - Powertrain.
