Exhaust System - Hissing Noise

No: 30/01/02/NAS

Issue: 1

Exhaust Noise

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Freelander (LN) 2A360097 to 2A373424

SITUATION:

EXHAUST NOISE FROM UNDER VEHICLE

The customer may complain of an exhaust hiss sound. Some Freelander exhaust systems have a slip joint that has been manufactured out of specification. The slot in the outer pipe has been cut too long so that the clamp at the joint does not completely cover the slot. This leaves a leak path opening up to 3 mm (1/8 inch) in length with the potential for an increased noise level.

RESOLUTION:

INSTALL NEW CLAMP ASSEMBLY

Refer to the procedures and parts information contained in this TIB and install the widened clamp packaged in kit WCL500010.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INSPECT TO VERIFY CONDITION

1. Position vehicle on lift, and raise lift to working height.

2. Verify that exhaust gas escaping from the slot protruding beyond the pipe clamp causes the exhaust noise. (Figure 1)

INSTALL NEW CLAMP ASSEMBLY

1. If the complaint is confirmed, perform the following steps:

^ Remove the nut, washer and spacer from the exhaust clamp.

^ Drive out the bolt using a drift.

^ Peel the clamp away from the exhaust pipe until a spot weld is exposed on the underside of the exhaust pipe. (Figure 2)

^ Using a chisel, break the spot weld securing the exhaust clamp to the exhaust pipe and remove the clamp. (Figure 3)

^ De-burr any remaining traces of the spot weld from the exhaust pipe.

CAUTION:
The nut must be fitted facing away from the adjacent exhaust pipe. (Figure 4)

^ Position and assemble the replacement clamp, (WCL500010) to exhaust pipe. (Figure 4)

NOTE:
The forward edge of the clamp must be aligned to the front edge of the intermediate pipe and it must cover the slot completely.

^ Rotate the clamp assembly through 180° so the bolt is on the top of the pipe.

^ Tighten the clamp bolt to 45 Nm (33 lbf.ft.).

2. Start and run engine to verify exhaust leak is repaired.

3. Remove vehicle from lift.
