Detached Key Shank

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Discovery Series II (LT) All

SITUATION:

KEY SHANK DETACHED FROM REMOTE HANDSET

The customer may complain that the key shank has pulled out of the remote handset plastic molding leaving the key shank in the ignition switch.

RESOLUTION:

RE-BOND KEY COMPONENTS

In the event of a customer complaint, examine the key shank and the socket location in the handset for damage before replacing the key/handset. If the components are undamaged, or damage is minimal, they can be re-bonded following the procedures outlined in this TIB. The situation may be aggravated by lack of familiarity with the key interlock functions and attempts to remove the key prematurely. Refer the customer to the Owner's Manual and ensure awareness of the interlock functions.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

RE-BOND COMPONENTS

1. Prepare the key shank using Loctite PRISM primer.

CAUTION:
Excess adhesive may enter other openings on the handset and prevent subsequent removal of the battery cover. Applications of force or sharp blows may damage the handset electronics. The use of a hammer or mallet may damage the sensitive electronic components within the handset.

2. Following manufacturer instructions, apply Loctite 411 to the section of the key shank that will enter the handset molding.





3. Push the key shank into the handset molding using hand pressure only. (Figure 1)

4. Remove any residual adhesive immediately and allow one hour before use to ensure a full cure.
