Rear entry Door Hinge Adjustment

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

SITUATION:

DAMAGE TO REAR ENTRY DOOR PAINT FILM IN AREA OF UPPER HINGE

The lower scroll of the rear entry door upper hinge and the rear entry door skin may come in contact on some Discovery Series II vehicles. The condition may cause paint damage or corrosion in the hinge area and possible noise when operating the door.

RESOLUTION:

IDENTIFY AND CORRECT HINGE INTERFERENCE

Upon customer complaint of paint damage or corrosion in the specified area, refer to the following procedure to identify and correct the condition.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

ADJUST DOOR HINGE





1. Refer to Figure 1 and examine the lower scroll of the upper hinge with the door closed.

2. Contact may be determined by looking for rubbed-off paint in the hinge scroll area where indicated. If no paint has been rubbed off, there is no contact.

3. Where contact has occurred, fully open the rear entry door.

4. Obtain a wedge with the following specification:

^ Made of nylon, hardwood or similar material

^ 15 mm (0.600 in) wide and 6 mm (0.240 in.) thick

^ One end tapered to a chisel point

CAUTION:
Use the wedge only in the manner described below. The wedge can cause panel damage if it is used as a lever or to pry the hinge from side to side. When used as described the wedge will safely achieve the desired result.





5. Refer to Figure 2. Working from inside the rear entry door insert the wedge into the gap between door skin and hinge.

6. Drive the wedge into the gap with several blows from a rubber mallet to ease the door skin away from the hinge.

7. Remove the wedge and close the door.

8. Inspect the hinge scroll to ensure that contact has been eliminated.

9. Open and close the door several times to confirm that clearance is maintained.

10. If contact has not been eliminated, go to step 5 and repeat steps 5 to 9.

11. If bare metal has been exposed, etch prime prior to painting and repair paint finish as required.
