A. Note the whole inch if appropriate. Write it down.
Example: 3.

B. Read the sleeve to the tenth and record.
Example: 3. + .2 = 3.2

C. Read the sleeve to the 25 thousandths (.025) and record.
Example: 3.2 + .05 = 3.25

D. Read the thimble to the thousandth (.001) and record.
Example: 3.25 + .007 = 3.257

E. Read the thimble to the half-thousandth (.0005) and record.
Example: 3.257 + .0005 = 3.2575

F. Finally, read the sleeve vernier to the closest tenth-thousandth (.00001) and ADD to the half-thousandth reading.
Example: 3.2527 + .0003 = 3.2578

Whole Inch: 3.0 inch
Tenths: .2 inch
25 Thousandths: .05 inch
1 Thousandths: .007 inch
Half-thousandths: .0005 inch
Ten-thousandths: .0003 inch

Total: 3.2578 inch
