Steering Box Replacement - New Parts and Procedures
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Discovery Series II (LT) up to 1A724402
SITUATION:
SUPERSESSION TO NEW STEERING BOX REQUIRES NEW LOCK STOPS
Steering box QAF100150 has been replaced by QAF000040. Internal changes made to the new steering box require the use of new steering stop bolts to prevent full lock tire contact with the front radius arms on Discovery Series II models fitted with 16 or 18 inch wheel/tire combinations.
RESOLUTION:
INSTALL LOCK STOP BOLTS IN CONJUNCTION WITH STEERING BOX SUPERSESSION
Whenever installing the new style steering box as a replacement for the earlier box, the steering lock stops at the steering knuckles must be replaced with new longer stop bolts (TTE000010). Alternatively, 2 spacer washers may be installed behind old configuration lock stops (FTC5151). Always use NEW STOCK lock stops because of the Loctite patch. Ensure that two washers are used on each side if FTC5151 lock stops are used.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
CAUTION:

1. Whenever steering box QAF100150 is replaced with QAF000040, remove existing lock stops from both left and right front steering knuckles and discard.
2. Obtain new lock stops.
3. If lock stop FTC5151 is to be used, position two spacing washers (WA112081L) per side behind the heads of each new lock stop. (Figure 1)
4. Install the lock stops finger tight.
5. Tighten stops to between 20 and 27Nm (15-20 lbf.ft.).
6. Move steering wheel from lock to lock and verify that at least 4 mm (5/32 in.) tire to front radius arm clearance has been obtained with the new lock stop configuration.
