Heat-shield Rattle

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Discovery Series II (LT) All

SITUATION:

UNDER FLOOR RATTLE SYMPTOMS

The owner can experience a rattling noise from under the vehicle. Upon investigation the center exhaust heat shield may be found to be loose on the fittings securing it to the body. Relaxation of the heat-shield retaining clips is the root cause of this rattle sound.

RESOLUTION:

REPLACE THE CLIPS WITH NEW FASTENERS

Where a customer complaint of the rattle symptom is confirmed and the relaxed clips are found to be the cause, replace the original heat-shield retaining clips with 6mm flange nuts.

PARTS INFORMATION:

ESR1560 Flange Nut - M6 Qty 4 required

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

30.10.89/37 Time 0.35 hrs.
Confirm source of rattle and install flange nuts.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

CAUTION:
When removing the original retaining clips, care must be taken to avoid damage to the heat shield and studs.

1. Inspect heat shield retainer clips to verify that they are the source of the rattle.

2. Remove the original heat-shield clips.





3. Install four 6 mm flange nuts (ESR156O) onto the original studs. (Figure 1)

4. Tighten the new flange nuts to 7 Nm (62 lbf.in.).
