Discovery Series II Fuel Gauge Inoperative

SITUATION:
INCORRECT FUEL GAUGE READING
Some Discovery Series II vehicle owners have encountered fuel gauges which either do not indicate above half a tank or are stuck at one reading. The root cause of this is incorrect positioning of the fuel pump in the tank, causing the float arm to foul.
RESOLUTION:
REMOVE PUMP AND EVALUATE SENDER FUNCTION
Upon owner complaint of the above symptoms follow the procedure below to evaluate and correct the problem.
NOTE:
It is not normally necessary to replace the fuel pump to correct this condition.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
WARNING:
Observe all cautions and warnings when working with fuel and fuel systems.
REMOVAL AND INSPECTION OF FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY
1. Refer to Section 19.45.08 of the Workshop Manual and remove the fuel pump assembly using special tool LRT-19-009. (Figure 1)
2. Refer to the resistance chart on Fuel System REPAIR page 19-2-8.
3. Connect an ohm meter and check the resistance of the fuel gauge through the float arm full range of motion against the values in the WSM chart.
INSTALLATION AND POSITIONING OF FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY
NOTE:
A fuel pump may only be replaced if inspection indicates damage to the pump assembly or the resistance measurement is out of specification.
CAUTION:
A new pump tank seal is ALWAYS required when installing a pump. Proper pump orientation is critical.
1. Place a new fuel pump seal (ESR3806) in the tank opening.
2. If the resistance of the sending unit is within specification and no damage is observed, position the original pump in the tank.
3. If the resistance measurement was out specification, or the pump assembly is damaged, position a new pump assembly (WFX101070) in the tank.
4. Verify that the pump is oriented properly in the indentation in the base of the tank.
